Spotlight predates Longhorn by 3 years
So, for all of you who though that Apple's Spotlight technology was a quick response to what Microsoft announced would be a part of Longhorn (which is due when, again?), here's proof that it was actually the other way around.
See the article over at MacObserver: Apple Spotlight Patent Reveals 3-Year Head Start on Microsoft
And, note that the integrated meta-search capability is vastly superior to any kind of "bolt-on" search technology like Google is pushing. I'm still partial to LaunchBar myself, but expect this may change with the release of Tiger.
Yes, we all know that Microsoft can't develop anything on their own, and that they merely copy our ideas, and pass them off as theirs - see Microsoft's mutiple attempts to spread FUD, as well as indications that they have severely cut their R&D spending to see for yourself. It's just nice to get some clear proof of that from time to time...Smiley Lore :-)
Since I've been on a "history" kick, I thought I'd share the story of the original "smiley" (a.k.a. "emoticon"). Find it here:

Pretty interesting to see how things have evolved... ;-)New iLife features
Well, iLife '05 is about to be unleashed on the masses, and it contains several very welcome updates to Apple's "Digital Lifestyle" suite. The updates to iPhoto - one of my most-used applications - are particularly welcome.
But a dry listing of the changes to each application isn't as useful as it might be, in allowing you to see all that's new. That's why I was very happy to see Jim Heid's analysis of many of the new iPhoto features. Jim is the author of the iLife book/DVD combinations "The Macintosh iLife", both '04 and '05 editions, and is always given early access to the final feature set. His books should be considered mandatory reading for anyone who wants to get the most out of this incredibly powerful software suite.
AND, Jim is also offering a free 16-page PDF, representing a "First Look" at the software. Great details, unique insights and usage examples - and it's free! Check it out...
